These terms are the agreement between you and Flipside for use of the app. By using Flipside you accept them. If you do not, please do not use the app.
They are written to be read. Where something limits what you can expect from us, it is stated plainly rather than buried.
Flipside reads food labels and gives each product a score out of 100, with the reasoning behind it.
The score is an opinion, not a fact about your health. It is calculated from public nutrition data and the ingredient list using a published method — you can read the whole method in the app, under How we score. Reasonable people, and other apps, will disagree with it.
It is not medical or nutritional advice. It does not know your medical history, your medications, your blood work, or what you have eaten today. It cannot tell you whether a food is safe or good for you specifically. If you have a health condition, an eating disorder, an allergy, or you are pregnant, decide with a qualified professional — not with a number in an app.
Do not rely on it for allergies. Flipside can flag allergens you ask it to watch for, and that flag can be wrong: the underlying record may be incomplete, out of date, or refer to a different formulation of the product. Manufacturers also change recipes without changing barcodes. Always read the packet yourself. A missed allergen can be serious, and the app is not a substitute for the label in your hand.
Product information comes from Open Food Facts, an open database maintained by volunteers, and from USDA FoodData Central. Some of it comes from labels photographed by other people using the app.
None of those sources is guaranteed to be accurate, complete, or current. We check what we can — a shared reading is only trusted once two independent readings agree — and we still cannot promise a record matches the packet in front of you.
If a product looks wrong, tap "This looks wrong". That is the fastest way to get it corrected for everybody.
Some features require a paid subscription.
We may change the price. If we do, you will be told before it applies to you, and you can cancel rather than accept it.
You may use Flipside for your own personal, non-commercial food shopping.
You may not:
We can suppress data associated with a barcode, and restrict access to the shared record, if it is being abused.
If you photograph a label and sharing is switched on, that reading is added to a shared record other people benefit from. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what is and is not sent.
By contributing, you grant us a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use that reading in the app and its data. You keep no claim over the figures on a manufacturer's label — they are facts about a product, not creative work — and we make no claim over anything else of yours.
Because contributions carry no identifier, they cannot be traced back to you and cannot be individually withdrawn. Switching sharing off stops any further ones.
Flipside is provided as is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we make no warranties: not that it will be available, not that it will be error free, and not that any score or record is accurate.
We are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the app, including any decision you make about what to eat or buy — except where liability cannot be excluded by law, which includes death or personal injury caused by negligence, and fraud. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you have paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms removes your statutory rights as a consumer.
You can stop using Flipside at any time by deleting it. We can suspend or end your access if you break these terms.
We may update these terms. The date at the top changes when we do, and any change that materially affects you will be shown in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use Flipside after that means you accept the change.
These terms are governed by the laws of the United States and the State of Connecticut, and disputes will be heard by the courts there. If you are a consumer in the EU or UK, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your own country, and you may bring proceedings there.
